Les Pourciaux dolmen...
Les Pourciaux is a Norman French term and as far as we can ascertain is the name of some 'dolmen' or 'standing stones' which once stood on the land. The main house is called Les Pourciaux after the dolmen and the self catering accommodation is now Les Pourciaux Cottage.
There are some remains of the dolmen on our property. The picture below is of an old postcard and dates to circa 1906. It shows the Les Pourciaux dolmen (described here as 'cromlech' as they are sometimes also referred to) in the foreground, and Essex Hill and Castle in the background. As its before the war and therefore before the wall was built you can see that the common and dunes go right to the beach and the road as it is now does not yet exist.
